I can't be sure. It may just be perspective but you may have here the swollen gall of the Pohuehue Gall Moth caterpillar Morova subfasciata (the S shaped broken branchlet). Neat animal. Unique to NZ. Males fly fast during the day. Females at night. Go figure.
