Serendipitous supply
When the Monarch Butterfly NZ Trust wanted to give a gift of plants, locally sourced from Rarangi Beach, east of Blenheim, they came to Oratia. Not only could we provide an eco-sourced species, it was also a plant which had since disappeared from the region!

This is the Trust's story.

Acaena novae-zelandiae

Piripiri (Ground Cover)
Vivid green foliage. Hardy and vigorous. If humidity is high, plant it in a windy, exposed site.

Growing along the coast near Nugget Point, Catlins. ID kindly provided by Christchurch Botanical Gardens.
This plant makes a great ground-cover where there's a bit of extra moisture you need mopping up. Awesome foliage, a bit Seuss-like in appearance, and if you trim the flower heads before they turn into hooks the annoyance of them getting everywhere is removed! (Nov2015)
