Summer planting
Contrary to popular opinion, summer planting is fine as long as adequate water is provided throughout any prolonged dry periods. This allows you to take advantage of increased summer growth.

This is not an easy species to keep going yet alone to get to the maximum size. It is leafless, weeping and produces masses of pink flowers. One of the most beautiful species.

Hates warmer, humid North Island areas. Best in drier eastern areas rich in limestone. I grew a plant (from seed collected at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens) at the Taupo Native Plant Nursery site and it was growing really quickly before a well-meaning gardener dug it out thinking it was a common broom! Perfect drainage, periodic droughts and some lime in the soil is a clue to its cultivation.
