Contrary to popular opinion, summer planting is fine as long as adequate water is provided throughout any prolonged dry periods. This allows you to take advantage of increased summer growth.

This fern did well in my garden in Hastings until the last two years. Two relatively mild winters have led to boom in two-spotted mite populations and these have had a summer-long orgy on P. vestitum. Geoff's response: To combat mite and other pests use "Shield" spray which is a systemic insecticide/fungicide and will cure most common plant problems.
